Elena Kagan as Supremem Court Justice

I forwarded this letter to our U.S. Senators in objection to the nomination of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court.

I am writing to oppose the nomination of Elena Kagan as Supreme Court Justice.

I have two primary objections, the first is that she has no experience in the judiciary. I believe this is critical for someone serving in the highest court in the land. Other lower courts may get along with minimal experience but to place someone in the highest court and have no real experience as a judge I believe is foolish. She should have some knowledge of what judges roles are and have served in that capacity. We do not need anymore individuals in our government that do not have the requisite experience.

The other objection is not so much her personally as her background in general. Why is it the we apparently think that the Ivy League Schools are the only ones from which suitable members of the judiciary should come. We hear a lot about assuring diversity in many other aspects of life, yet when it comes to the Supreme Court, we don’t even have the token outsider on the court. We need to spread membership to this, the most elite of clubs, to graduates of character and ability from other schools.

I am not a lawyer but it is my belief that nothing runs as well when all members think alike. We need some new blood in the Court. I know of a number of very good law schools, Michigan, Stanford, Chicago, Illinois, California, and many others. This group think of only Ivy League schools is wrong and gives only one outcome in general.

Please consider not voting to affirm Ms. Kagan and look for a truly diverse candidate with actual experience in a judicial role.
