An Animated Ranking Of The Most Popular Social Media Networks Since 2003
It's not hard to guess which social media network currently has the most users — spoilers, it's Facebook — but what's perhaps more interesting about this graph from The Next Web is looking at all the networks that have fallen precipitously in popularity over the years.
Using
data from the quarterly and annual reports of companies, The Next Web
has put together a bar chart race that shows the social media networks
with the most monthly active users from 2013 to 2018:
One
of the main things you notice from the graph is the gradual ascension
of Facebook and YouTube over the years. Since 2009, the two have claimed
top spots as the most popular social media networks, with Facebook
supplanting YouTube as No. 1 in 2011.
And
while we mourn the fallen status of Myspace, which was the most popular
social media platform from 2005 to early 2007, let us all take a moment
to pour one out for other networks that have come and gone over the
years — including Friendster, hi5, Orkut and Google Buzz (honestly, we
don't even remember that that was a thing) — and to marvel at the
startling longevity of LinkedIn, which has been there since the very
beginning of 2003.
