22 million U.S. businesses are one-person operations

More than 22 million U.S. businesses are one-man or one-woman shows. Each of these tiny firms has a single owner, but no paid employees at all.

"Nonemployer businesses," as the U.S. Census Bureau calls them, combined for $950 billion of receipts in 2010, the latest year for which official figures are available.

Yes, that's $950 billion -- with a B.

But the bottom line isn't nearly as impressive once all of that money has been divvied up among the 22.11 million firms. The typical nonemployer business made $43,000 in 2010.

Most of these one-person enterprises are start-up and/or sideline businesses. Entrepreneurs as diverse as beauticians, contractors and real-estate agents do much of their work at night and on weekends, the so-called "free time" from their primary jobs.

Twenty-seven counties are home to more than 100,000 nonemployer businesses, led by Los Angeles County, Calif., with 875,747.

The following database provides breakdowns for all 3,140 counties and independent cities (IC) across the country. Use the tab to isolate a single state, or merely hit Search to view everything at once. If you want to re-sort the list, click the appropriate column header.

Nonemployer businesses drew an average of $70,400 in New York County, N.Y., better known as the borough of Manhattan. That's the highest figure for any county with at least 10,000 qualifying firms.

The highest average for a county of any size is $138,700 for the 995 nonemployer businesses in Colusa County, Calif., located north of Sacramento and San Francisco.
