Yesterday was a terrible day for their efforts. Their bogus “fact check” was exposed as a laughable sham when the State Department confirmed that the Benghazi Committee was the first congressional committee to request the emails of Ambassador Chris Stevens.
Shortly before the State Department delivered nearly 1,300 pages of the slain ambassador’s emails to the Benghazi panel Tuesday, Democrats on the select committee sent out a “fact check” that they said debunked the “inaccurate claim” that the Stevens emails were new to Congress. However that was a lie:
“In fact, Congress has had access to many of Ambassador Stevens’ emails for years,” committee Democrats wrote. “Although some additional emails from Ambassador Stevens have been produced, none of them include any evidence to change the core fact that was already known: Secretary Clinton was not involved in responding to requests for additional security in Benghazi.”
While seven other committees have investigated aspects of the Benghazi attack, a State Department official told the Washington Examiner Tuesday the agency is “not aware” of any previous requests for Stevens’ emails.According to the Washington Post, Cummings and his fellow Democrats are more concerned with protecting Hillary than finding out the truth about Benghazi:
Democrats are ramping up an aggressive, multi-pronged effort to quash the damaging effects of the 17-month investigation before Clinton testifies on Thursday. This week, ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and his staff are embracing the offensive with coordinated messaging, rapid response and a bevy of memos, fact-checking documents and reports. …Gee I wonder why. And it’s not just the Washington Post, Politico reports:
Republicans have suggested that Benghazi panel Democrats are directly coordinating with the Clinton presidential campaign and outside groups in an effort to protect Clinton. …
“It’s abundantly clear that several members of the Committee are focused solely on her poll numbers instead of getting the truth – and they’re all Democrats,” [Gowdy spokesman Matt] Wolking emailed.
A Democratic aide said both Democrats and Republicans have been in touch with counsel for Clinton. The aide did not comment on allegations of strategic coordination with the campaign.
At Correct The Record, a PAC that coordinates with Hillary Clinton’s campaign, a war room of about 30 staffers will be on hand to defend Clinton and attack the committee as she heads to Capitol Hill Thursday to testify in front of the House Select Committee on Benghazi.CNN reports:
As part of a multi-front attack against the Republican-led Benghazi Select Committee, the super PAC backing Hillary Clinton’s campaign will release a 140-page book of opposition research Wednesday, obtained exclusively by CNN, that impugns the character of Republicans on the committee.Secretary Clinton has not testified yet and the committee hasn’t come close to releasing a report, but Cummings and the Democrats are launching a preemptive strike, throwing fog in front of any new facts coming from the Benghazi committee.
Aside from the fact that the Obama administration initially told the American people that the well-coordinated terrorist attack in Benghazi was a “spontaneous protest” in response to a YouTube video (and we learned that they picked a different video first) and aside from the fact that an employee banned from working in the Obama administration (Sidney Blumenthal) was one of Secretary Clinton’s primary emailers on Libya and Benghazi, why are Democrats so intent on derailing and discrediting the only real investigation into the murder of four Americans?
Politics. You see chairman of the Benghazi Committee Trey Gowdy has been working hard to keep the committee void of leaks, and not political, but it is Rep. Cummings who desperately wants to protect Hillary Clinton by inserting politics into the the committee.
This afternoon, <24 hours before the Clinton testimony, the State Department delivered anther 900 pages of Ambassador Stevens emails not seen by any other committee.
