White House May Hold President Obama’s Official Inauguration in Private
There
is controversy surrounding President Obama’s inauguration in January.
The White House Press Corps has sent a letter to the Obama
administration with questions about whether the swearing-in will be kept
from the press.The Constitution dictates that the inauguration must be held on January 20th. This year, that date falls on a Sunday – a day in which no public inaugurations are held. Katie Pavlich, news editor for townhall.com, explained that in this instance, a private inauguration would be held over the weekend and a public ceremony would take place the following Monday.
However, the White House has indicated that the press may be excluded from the official swearing-in. The Presidential Inauguration Committee says nothing has been decided yet, but they sent out a press release referring to a “private inauguration.”
The last time an inauguration fell on a Sunday was in 1985 when Ronald Reagan was sworn in. The press was invited to that private ceremony, but this time around the White House wants to issue its own official photo to the press.Pavlich said, “This kind of indicates a pattern of how this White House has behaved with the press. Remember the White House was editing press pools back during the election with Vice President Joe Biden.”
She added, “I think that the people who elected President Obama deserve an independent body, known as the White House Press Corps, to document this.”
