Charles Krauthammer To White House Communications Director: YOU ARE SO BUSTED.

I love love love when Krauthammer’s bitchy side comes out. It’s my favorite.
Background: A week or so ago, CK wrote about Romney’s trip abroad, and happened to mention in that same column that Obama had returned a bust of Winston Churchill that Tony Blair had given to GWB after 9/11 back to the British Embassy. GWB had it displayed in the Oval Office. Obama, on the other hand, didn’t have use for it and promptly gave it back.
Not even a full day passed before the Communications Director for the White House, Dan Pfeiffer, posted on the Actual Official White House Website, this shrill and shrieky retort: “…normally, we wouldn’t address a rumor that’s so patently false, but just this morning the Washington Post’s Charles Krauthammer repeated this ridiculous claim in his column . . . This is 100% false. The bust [is] still in the White House. In the Residence. Outside the Treaty Room.” He even went so far as to include what he thought was photographic evidence of the bust in the White House as recently as 2010.
Awww. Poor Danny. Not only is he in the unfortunate position of having to be in charge of White House Communications, but he also SUCKS AT IT. Because as it turns out, the British Embassy piped in a few hours later to verify that, “the bust now resides in the British ambassador’s residence in Washington D.C.”
Whoops.
A GOOD communications director would probably immediately own up to the error, particularly when the messaging was so snippy. But Danny doesn’t play that way. The photo he’d included in his post was a different sculpture altogether, one that has been in the White House for over 50 years. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if Obama wanted to get rid of that one too, but that’s neither here nor there.
Anyway, CK didn’t take kindly to Dan Pfeiffer making these PATENTLY FALSE AND RIDICULOUS accusations against him, and so he dedicated an ENTIRE EXTRA COLUMN to this story, to demonstrate how completely stupid Dan Pfeiffer is. I cannot tell you how much I love that.
As CK points out, even the New York Times editorial page editor, who repeated Pfeiffer’s claims, backpedaled (appropriately) and said, “I got some facts wrong, because I made the mistake of relying on a White House blog post by the communications director Dan Pfeiffer.” He even called Pfeiffer’s post “weaselly.” OUCH.
And even more ouchy? Krauthammer’s blistering concluding paragraph:
So I suggest Mr. Pfeiffer bring this to a short, painless and honorable conclusion: a simple admission that he got it wrong and that my assertion was correct. An apology would be nice, but given this White House’s arm’s-length relationship with truth — and given Ryan Zimmerman’s hot hitting — I reckon the Nationals will win the World Series before I receive Pfeiffer’s mea culpa.”
ZING!
