350 out of 4,150 college presidents sign gun control letter
Arne Duncan stands with college presidents, mayors, students and others to call for gun control.
Duncan appeared on Capitol Hill with leaders of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the United States Student Association, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, and College Presidents for Gun Safety.
“I don’t know of a time when so many college and university presidents have spoken collectively, with one voice, on any issue of such public importance,” Oglethorpe University President Lawrence Schall said at the press conference.
The group of college presidents was created after the deadly shootings of 20 students and six teachers in Newtown, Conn., in December. It published an open letter to U.S. policy leaders urging them to:
* Oppose legislation allowing guns on school campuses
* End the “gun show loophole,” which allows people to buy guns from unlicensed sellers without a criminal background check
* Ban military-style semi-automatic assault weapons along with high-capacity ammunition magazines
* Require consumer safety standards for all guns, such as safety locks
As John Merrow notes in this blogpost,
the percentage of college presidents signing the open letter is not
large. When he wrote the blogpost less than a week ago, more than 330
presidents had signed, “almost all of them the leaders of private
institutions (perhaps because they don’t have to answer to governors and
legislatures).” He said:
Is that a homerun? Depends on how you count, it seems to me. America has about 4,150 colleges and universities, which means that just under 8 percent have signed the letter. However, given that it’s tough for the presidents of public institutions to step out on this limb, we ought to consider the universe of private institutions, some 2,450 in all. That brings the number to just over 13%.Some public university presidents did sign, including this show of force in Maryland: Wallace D. Loh of the University of Maryland College Park; Juliette B. Bell of University of Maryland Eastern Shore; Javier Miyares of University of Maryland University College; Jay A. Perman of University of Maryland Baltimore; and Freeman A. Hrabowski III of University of Maryland of Baltimore County; David Wilson of Morgan State University; Joseph Urgo of St. Mary’s College of Maryland (MD)
Now 350-plus presidents have signed but, still, while the number is growing, there isn’t a big rush to sign it.
