Even as Barack Obama has added nearly $9 trillion to the federal debt and overseen annual budget deficits ranging from $450 billion to $1.5 trillion he continues to increase spending and spending proposals. This causes many to wonder, “What corresponding cost cutting is he proposing to pay for all this spending?” This week we found out. Obama is cutting military pay…again.
By now the disdain this president has for the U.S. military is clear and known to all, but his willingness to stiff our men and women in uniform in order to pay for his green initiatives, golf outings and family vacations should be enough to turn anyone’s stomach. With his family barely back from yet another multi-million-dollar, taxpayer-funded two weeks on posh Martha’s Vineyard, Obama is about to give the members of our military a stiffing.
Federal law states that those serving in our nation’s military receive a yearly pay raise in accordance with a formula utilized by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The House of Representatives typically uses the figure BLS sends to factor into the Fiscal Year Budget which is in turn sent to the commander in chief.

But once again America’s commander in chief, B Hussein Obama, has decided to use an emergency loophole in the U.S. Code to deny the (formulated) pay raise for our troops.
The Washington Examiner has reported that members of the United States Armed Forces will see a pay increase of just 1.6 percent effective January 1. By law those service members should have received a pay increase of at least 2.1 percent. The 2.1 percent pay hike was mandated by law, but once again the law and our White House are at odds and when that happens we know which wins.
Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) issued an infuriated statement concerning Obama again cutting military pay, “Few people are more deserving of a full pay raise than our men and women in uniform. Yet, at the same time President Obama is proposing significant increases in military deployments and expanding existing missions, he is cutting the pay raise for our troops for the fourth year in a row.”
He stated (the obvious) that giving military families a measly 1.6 percent pay increase will hurt those families, “The lower pay increase mandated by the president means a young military family would receive about $336 less this year than the law provides. Over four years of a lower rate, the family will have lost between $1,500 and $2,000.” Obama used the Chief Executive’s “economic emergency” provision to bypass the BLS formula, the House of Representatives, and Title 5 U.S.C., sections 5303(b) and 5304 (a) to cut military pay.
A little historical perspective shows just how pathetic this move by Obama. A search of Navy Cyber Space
data archives shows the pay increase under Ronald Reagan. In 1982 Reagan raised military pay 14.3 percent.
By way of comparison, let’s look at the pay increases during the Obama years. The pay raise approvals Obama has actually signed for the Uniformed Services have been a steady decline:
2010 – 3.4 percent
2011 – 1.4 percent
2012 – 1.6 percent
2013 – 1.7 percent
2014 – 1.0 percent
2015 – 1.0 percent
2016 – 1.3 percent
2017 – 1.6 percent
And so there you have it. While the Obamas manage 3 weeks in Hawaii every December and 2 weeks on Martha’s Vineyard every August and the president has squeezed in close to 300 rounds of taxpayer-funded golf, those willing to sacrifice their lives for the protection of freedom and liberty can look forward to a pay increase so minuscule it will barely be noticed.
