It could accurately be described as a mess that’s quickly rising to the level of a scandal — the Army’s case against Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and the Obama administration’s scramble to contain increasingly toxic fallout from the president’s decision to swap five Taliban terrorists for an alleged deserter.
As Western Journalism reported yesterday, calls for Obama’s impeachment could well grow louder with the military’s decision to charge Bergdahl with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy — walking away from his remote post in Afghanistan and endangering his fellow soldiers.
Well known defense expert and founder of the Center for Security Policy, Frank Gaffney, suggests that even before approving the prisoner swap that freed Bergdahl from captivity in exchange for the Taliban detainees, President Obama knew that Bergdahl could have been a deserter.
“Presumably, that was why former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta refused to approve an initial proposal by the White House to release five top Taliban commanders from Guantanamo Bay as ransom to get Bergdahl back from the enemy.” A tweet from conservative political activist and filmmaker Dinesh D-Souza sums up the feelings of many on the right:

Despite the mounting controversy over Bergdahl and the president’s questionable actions, a State Department spokeswoman says the trade to free the American soldier from his five-year captivity in Afghanistan was “absolutely” worth it.Jen Psaki, who is headed to the White House as the new communications director, told Megyn Kelly on Wednesday that the president acted properly in the prisoner swap because we should “do everything” to bring our warfighters home — even if “everything” includes freeing known Taliban terrorists for a suspected deserter — a man Obama may have been advised was far from being an honorable U.S. soldier.
