18-year-old mother shoots intruder to protect baby.

There's nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her child.

Twenty-four year old Justin Martin learned that lesson the hard way when he broke into the home of 18-year-old Sarah McKinley, who was alone with her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve.

McKinley, whose husband had just died of cancer a week before, was forced to shoot Martin after he broke into her home, located in Blanchard, OK.

According to McKinley, Martin tried to make his way into her home on the day of her husband's funeral, but she refused to let him in.

ABC News reported:

On New Year's Eve Martin returned with another man, Dustin Stewart, and this time was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The two soon began trying to break into McKinley's home.

As one of the men was going from door to door outside her home trying to gain entry, McKinley called 911 and grabbed her 12-gauge shotgun.
Armed with a shotgun and a pistol, she called 911.
"I've got two guns in my hand -- is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" she asked the dispatcher.
"I'm here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?"
According to ABC, the dispatcher verified with McKinley that all the doors were locked. McKinley asked again if she could shoot the intruder if he broke in.
"I can't tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher said.
ABC reported that McKinley was on the phone with 911 for 21 minutes.
Eventually, Martin kicked the door in and that's when McKinley acted.
Instead of finding a timid young girl, the knife-wielding Martin found himself facing an 18-year-old "mama grizzly" with a shotgun. She fired, killing Martin. His partner eventually turned himself in to police.
Authorities are calling the shooting justified.
"You're allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force," Blanchard police Detective Dan Huff said.
The young mother said she would not have shot Martin if not for her son.
“It’s not an easy decision to make, but it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn’t going to be my son,” she told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO.
“There’s nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child.”
