The Council for a Livable World was established
in 1962 by Leo Szilard, a former Manhattan Project scientist and a
prominent anti-nuclear activist.Szilard was also a Marxist and according to former Pavel Sudaplatov, former wartime director of the KGB’s Administration for Special Tasks, a Soviet agent.
Szilard declared that the purpose of the group was “to combat the menace of nuclear war.” Their major method was to promote U.S. disarmament concessions to the USSR and “non-intervention” against Soviet aggression.
The group adopted a clever strategy. Long time director Jerome Grossman claims that by funding Senators at the beginning of their careers, Council for a Livable World was able to influence them later on.
We try to find obscure people who would make good Senators or Representatives and early on try to give them the initial funding. Now we can’t compete with the big money. We only raise a million and a half each election cycle. But that’s a million and a half that has no cost to them. Because we get in early, and because it’s tied to issues, seems to have some kind of an effect. Then if we elect somebody they’re eternally grateful. Then we go and we are able to get a hearing. The group boasts that several major weapons systems have been cancelled because of its influence.
Over the years the Council has helped to elect and presumably influence hundreds of Senators and Congressmen who have been sympathetic to the group’s disarmament message.
These include Barack Obama (pictured below with Jerome Grossman in 1994), Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Harry Reid, Ted Kennedy, Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, Chris Dodd, Chris Coons, Dick Durbin, Tom Harkin, Patty Murray, Al Franken, Jeff Merkley, Carl Levin, Chuck Schumer, Sherrod Brown, Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders.
The Council’s latest victories include both Massachusetts Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey.
The Council for a Livable World has probably done more damage to U.S. defense capabilities than any other organization in the country.
My new book The Enemies Within: Communists, Socialists and Progressives in the U.S. Congress exposes the Council for a Livable World and many of the Senators and Representatives it has helped to elect.
“The Enemies Within” will be officially released August 20, 2013, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
