Socialism in America! : A History Lesson
But if you study history, you find that many of the truths we know are actually false. For instance, George Washington was not the first president of the United States. He was actually the fourtenth president. You have to understand that what made us a country was the Declaration of Independence. And that was the beginning of our country. The first president was actually an interim president. His name was Thomas McKean, who filled the position before John Hanson of Maryland, the first elected president took office. Hanson wasted no time and established the Great Seal of the United States, created the first treasury department, the first secretary of war, threw out all foreign troops other than the British, and designated the fourth Thursday in November as a national holiday known as Thanksgiving. Some more famous persons held the title of president such as John Hancock who served twice as president and Richard Henry Lee, grandfather of Robert E Lee.
Then there is the myth that Lincoln freed the slaves. Undoubtedly, he would have if he had lived, but in truth the Emancipation Proclamation freed exactly zero slaves. He imposed this proclamation only on the southern states who did not recognize his authority and omitted all states who remained loyal to the union. It did allow generals to send any slaves captured northward to freedom. Slave labor allowed the South to continue send their young men into battle while the slaves grew the crops. This was done to weaken the South and hopefully end the war sooner.
Another popular myth is that Jackie Robinson was the first black to play in the major leagues. He was not. Fleet Walker was. He played for the Toledo Blue Stockings starting in 1883. In 1884, the Blue Stockings became part of the American Association, later known as the American League. The second black player was Welday Walker, brother of Moses Fleetwood Walker. There was one other player who played one game earlier than jackie. He was allowed to play because the team claimed he was Cuban and not black. After the game, the league discovered the ruse and that ended his career and his name escapes me. But Jackie was the first openly black player in the majors but was third or fourth depending on your point of view.
Then there is the myth that the Pilgrims first landed on Plymouth Rock. That too is false. They actually landed on what is now known as Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod. They were headed to Plymouth Rock, but were short on food and landed there in order to stock up with food.
The Pilgrims also are responsible for another first. They were the first and last (until Obama) experimenters of socialism. As the Governor William Bradford wrote in his log, all food was placed in a common storehouse and divided up equally. This would make everyone equal. But in truth, people are not equal. Some have more brains, some more talent, and some more ambition. In their first year, half of the Pilgrims died, including Bradford’s wife. He then realized the experiment was deeply flawed because some were lazy, knowing they did not need to work to share in the harvest. The productive and talented slacked off, knowing they would gain nothing by working harder and producing more.
However, it did produce equality. Everyone starved, regardless of position and social standing. Bradford knew that if he didn’t change the rules, the colony was doomed and all would die. He voided part of their contract with the merchants in London, who had financed their colony, distributed a set amount of land to every colonist, who would be allowed to see the profit of their labors. It was a huge success. The lazy worked to keep from starving and the ambitious made the most of what they had and produced so much food that they were actually able to sell their abundance to the Indians and to England. We cannot, no, we must not fall for the line that all should share the wealth. As Reagan once noted, a rising tide lifts all boats. Conservative principals have always benefitted the majority, whereas collectivism has always produced negative results.
To prove my point, I direct you to the GINI Index, which measures the gap between the rich and the poor. According to Obama and progressives, their policies create equality. But does it really? Under Ronald Reagan, trhe gap shrank by 7%. And under Bush, it shrank by 7%. Under Bill Clinton, the gap actually increased by 6.7%. And in Obama’s first two years the gap grew by 5.6% or what would amount to 22%, should, Heaven forbid, he serve two full terms.
Was this a fluke or is there a reason for these numbers? Let’s get down to the facts. Fact number one is the rich will always make money. Under regimes that decry fairness and seek to punish the productive, tax shelters, triple tax-free muni bonds and foreign investment become the method most often used. But under a conservative, businesses are allowed to thrive and their owners are allowed to keep more of their money and they can earn more by starting or expanding businesses. The poor and the middle classes profit from this as more and more jobs are created. This allows people to seek upward mobility either through promotion or by changing jobs. The idea that the rich try to pay as little as they can is both absurd and dishonest. Smart businessmen know that to continue to grow and profit, they need to be able to keep their best and brightest and that requires them to pay well. It’s just good business.
FDR once imposed a wage freeze and businesses began losing their best employees to other companies where they could get more money, since that wouldn’t be covered by the freeze. At this juncture, businesses started offering health insurance, sick days and other perks which the law did not prevent.
Equality is a myth just as the others I explained. End the myth……………repeal Obama.
