Fox
News retained its top spot in the cable news ratings battle in 2013
despite falling viewership, according to Nielsen data reported by
TVNewser.
The network, owned by 21st Century Fox, tallied nearly 1.1 million total viewers for primetime shows and 1.76 million day viewers. Total viewership fell 5%, reflecting the broader struggles of the cable business, which is steadily losing customers to other video options.
Fox News shook up its lineup in September for the fall season, moving Shepard Smith from the 7 p.m. ET slot to lead a breaking news division, and assigning anchor Megyn Kelly to the 9 p.m. ET prime-time slot.
CNN, which completed its first year of operation under the leadership of Jeff Zucker, trailed Fox and MSNBC in primetime viewership, which totaled 568,000. It was CNN's lowest 8-11 p.m. ET ratings in 20 years, according to TVNewser.
The network, owned by Time Warner, pointed out that its total day viewers, 413,000, surpassed MSNBC. CNN's total day ratings remained flat in 2013, compared with a year earlier.
"While all of CNN's individual primetime programs showed ratings increases in 2013, all cable news network's 8-11 p.m. time period ratings are down compared to 2012 — largely due to each network's presidential election programming," a CNN statement said Thursday. "As a result, all the networks are posting primetime time period lows vs. a year ago."
MSNBC, which had 640,000 viewers for the 8-11 p.m. ET time slot, beat CNN for second place in primetime. Its day viewers totaled 394,000, down 21% from 2012.
