As Chicago continues to see violent weekends and repeated calls for relief to its most affected neighborhoods, other areas in Illinois have been categorized as very safe by Safewise.com, a site that recommends safety procedures in the face of crime and natural disaster. They named the 50 safest cities in Illinois (in terms of crime), based on FBI data and their own research.
Protecting yourself, your family and your home from crime can be one of the most important steps in staying safe in any city in Illinois. Safewise offered five tips on protecting your home from burglary:

• Get a dog (or even a recording of a dog barking) to intimidate potential intruders (and if Fido can physically protect your home as well, even better)
• Install outdoor lighting so it’s both harder for criminals to hide in the shadows and so it looks like you are home, even when you aren’t (consider managing these, and even certain indoor lights, on a timer)
• Keep your yard tidy so there are fewer places for a burglar to hide, especially right outside windows
• Keep your travel plans off social media so people won’t know when your home may be unoccupied
• Remember to cancel your newspaper and mail deliveries
• Don’t keep valuables near windows where they can be seen from outside and possibly tempt passersby
