Man’s Favorite Food Gives Him PARASITES Throughout His Entire Body
In a bizarre and certainly disgusting story, a man ended up having tapeworms throughout his entire body after he indulged in his favorite food.According to MailOnline, a Chinese man’s love for sashimi sushi nearly killed him after it led to his entire body being riddled with the parasitic worms.
Scans of the man’s body revealed the horrific images of tapeworms across nearly every inch of his body after he went to the doctor complaining of stomach pains and extremely itchy skin. Doctors believe that the man ate a contaminated serving of the raw fish, which led to the disgusting infestation.
Tapeworm infections occur after a person ingests the larvae of diphyllobothrium, which is generally found in freshwater fish such as salmon and can be transmitted if eaten raw. However, research has shown that the nasty little bugs can still pose a threat if the flesh has been marinated or smoked.
MailOnline reports that cases of parasitic infestations in poorer nations have actually been on the decline as their sanitation methods improve. However, developed nations have been seeing an increase in such cases due to the soaring popularity of sushi.
“The widespread popularity of Japanese sushi and sashimi (slices of raw fish) is a contributor,” wrote Nancy Craig, author of a study on parasitic infections for the Canadian Family Physician. “But other popular dishes might also be implicated, such as raw salted or marinated fillets – which originate from Baltic and Scandinavian countries – carpaccio – very thin slices of raw fish common in Italy, raw salmon and ceviche – lightly marinated fish.”
While the Chinese man whose body was infested with the parasites lived, others aren’t always so lucky.
According to Dr. Yin from the hospital where the man was treated, eating raw fish that has the eggs of the tapeworm in it can lead to cysticercosis, a condition where the adult worms enter a person’s bloodstream. Should they be able to reach the brain the condition then becomes life-threatening.
