Colorado Gov Gets Low Grades On Guns, Death
Quinnipiac University Poll Finds
Colorado voters disapprove by wide margins of the way Gov. John Hickenlooper is handling gun
control and the death penalty, leaving him with a lackluster approval rating and locked in a too-
close-to-call race for reelection next year, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released
today.
Voters disapprove 48 - 27 percent of the way Gov. Hickenlooper is handling the death
penalty and disapprove 52 - 35 percent of the way he is handling gun policy, the independent
Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds.
These negatives are offset by a 50 - 41 percent approval for his handling of the economy,
leaving the governor with an overall job approval rating of 48 - 44 percent.
Hickenlooper gets good marks for personal characteristics. Voters say:
57 - 38 percent that he has strong leadership qualities;
56 - 35 percent that he is honest and trustworthy;
50 - 44 percent that he cares about their needs and problems.
"The key for Gov. John Hickenlooper, as it is for many issues in America today, is the
attitude of independent voters. These voters go against the governor on his handling of gun
control and the death penalty, but split 46 - 46 percent on his overall job approval," said Tim
Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
"On almost every question, women side with the governor more than men, giving him a
54 - 37 percent approval rating, while men disapprove 51 - 43 percent.
Only 45 percent of Colorado voters say Hickenlooper deserves to be reelected while 48
percent say he does not.
In an early look at the 2014 election for Colorado governor, Hickenlooper gets 46 percent
to 45 percent for former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo, the Republican. Independent voters are
divided 43 - 43 percent.
Facing Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler, Hickenlooper leads 47 - 42 percent.
The governor tops Republican State Sen. Greg Brophy 47 - 40 percent.
"Gov. Hickenlooper has gone against popular opinion on the death penalty and gun
control, but he is doing better on that bread and butter issue - the economy. Let's see how that
plays out in the next 14 months," Malloy said.
2016 White House Race
Colorado keeps its status as a swing state in the 2016 presidential election as former
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ties New Jersey Gov. Christopher Christie 42 - 43 percent.
Clinton gets 45 percent to 42 percent for U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, too close to call.
Vice President Joseph Biden trails Gov. Christie 50 - 33 percent and falls behind Sen.
Cruz 45 - 39 percent.
The former first lady has 51 - 44 percent favorability rating. Christie has lower negatives
as he scores a 50 - 22 percent favorability. Cruz gets a 26 - 16 percent score as 58 percent of
voters say they don't know enough about him to form an opinion. Biden gets a negative 40 - 50
percent favorability.
Colorado voters disapprove 56 - 41 percent of the job President Barack Obama is doing,
little changed from a 54 - 43 percent disapproval in a June 14 Quinnipiac University poll.
U.S. Sen. Mark Udall gets a 47 - 34 percent approval rating as voters say 44 - 36 percent
he deserves to be reelected next year.
Voters approve 42 - 34 percent of the job U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet is doing.
From August 15 - 21, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,184 registered voters with a
margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones.
The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public
opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia,
